Leon Goretzka bosses it for Bayern Munich as injured Harry Kane sees Bundesliga goalscoring record hopes crumble for good in comfortable win over Wolfsburg

  • Lovro Zvonarek opened scoring in first Bundesliga start
  • Goretzka added a second, controlled the midfield
  • Harry Kane missed fixture due to back injury

TELL ME MORE

Zvonarek opened the scoring inside five minutes, firing a shot off the inside of the post to mark his first Bundesliga start with a bang. Leon Goretzka doubled the lead 10 minuted later, guiding a fine curled finish into the top corner. The Bavarians thought they had a third, but a tight offside saw it ruled out. They saw the rest of the contest out, Thomas Tuchel happy to rotate as they cruised to a win.

THE MVP

He may not have hit his best this year – or even been a guaranteed starter every week – but Goretzka has still shown in glimpses that he can be among the best in Europe in central midfield. This was one of those days. The German bossed the middle of the park, winning tackles, progressing the ball, and picking the right moments to stride forward. His goal was wonderfully taken – a lovely whipped effort into the top corner – and he controlled the game throughout. Whether he gets into Germany’s XI at Euro 2024 remains to be seen, but this was a showing that proved he can still be a top class centre-midfielder on his day.

THE BIG LOSER

Well, there go Kane’s hopes at snagging the Bundesliga goalscoring record for good. The Englishman was always going to face a tough task to surpass Robert Lewandowski’s mark (he would have needed six in his last two games.) But after picking up a back injury against Real Madrid game that saw him miss this fixture, Kane will have to wait until next season to have another stab at what seems an untouchable mark. Kane has deserved better this campaign, and this looks like a disappointing way for it to end.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Bayern’s season is now in the process of winding down. Their final fixture is next Saturday, when they will finish Hoffenheim and attempt to wrap up a second-placed Bundesliga finish.
