Man Utd confirm Dan Ashworth appointment as sporting director after agreeing deal with Newcastle amid fears of legal dispute

WHAT HAPPENED?

Ashworth has been “immediately” released from his contract at Newcastle and will take up a key position in the new Old Trafford hierarchy beneath new chief executive Omar Berrada and leading new technical director Jason Wilcox.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ashworth’s appointment is considered a key piece of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision for the Old Trafford club. The former FA executive made clear his intenton to join the Red Devils back in February and has spent nearly five months on gardening leave while the two clubs attempted to thrash out a deal.

WHAT MAN UTD & NEWCASTLE SAID

A joint statement issued by the clubs read: “Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United. The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs. Newcastle United thanks Dan for his services and wishes him well for the future.”
