WHAT HAPPENED?

It took England 94 minutes to finally score their first goal of the game against Slovakia as they narrowly avoided defeat in their last-16 tie thanks to Bellingham’s acrobatic finish. Upon scoring the scintillating goal, the Real Madrid star ran up to the stands and shouted ‘Who Else?’. The midfielder has now explained why he said that during the wild celebrations.

WHAT BELLINGHAM SAID

Speaking to the media, Bellingham said: “Why the ‘Who Else’? The adrenaline gets you. It’s a combination of a lot of things. Playing for England is an enjoyable feeling, but it’s also a lot of pressure. You hear people talk a lot of rubbish. It’s nice when you can deliver and give them a little bit back.

“It’s very difficult when you talk in press conferences and interviews, to talk as openly as footballers want to because they’re always judged. For me, football, being on the pitch, scoring goals and celebrating is my release. Maybe it was a message to a few people. I was very happy at the end, lots of adrenaline.

“It’s a feeling that is like no other. In international football, in knockout football, it’s an even worse feeling, because you’re 30 seconds from going home, having to listen to all the rubbish, feeling like you have let a nation of people down. In one kick of the ball, everything can change.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham came into the Euros with an immense amount of expectations placed on his 21-year-old shoulders. This was partly due to his form for Real Madrid in the domestic season as he helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side to a La Liga and Champions League double scoring a number of crucial goals. For England, however, the Stourbridge-born midfielder has received loads of criticism for his shortcomings when he does not score.

WHAT NEXT FOR BELLINGHAM?

Regardless of what the critics think of the former Borussia Dortmund man, Bellingham is a crucial part of Gareth Southgate’s side and he will feature once again in midfield when the Three Lions take on Switzerland in the quarter-final on July 6.
