Where to watch Switzerland vs. Italy live stream, TV channel, lineups, prediction for Euro 2024 Round of 16 match

Defending champions Italy are aiming to hit form in the last 16 of Euro 2024 when they face an undefeated Switzerland in Berlin.

Luciano Spalletti’s side left it late to secure their spot in the knockout stages when substitute Mattia Zaccagni scored a 98th-minute equaliser against Croatia.

Former Napoli boss Spalletti switched formations and personnel after being outplayed in the 1-0 defeat to Spain and he is likely to need a huge improvement in performance if the Azzurri are to continue their title defence.

Switzerland began in impressive fashion when they beat Hungary 3-1 on the opening weekend. An underwhelming 1-1 draw against Scotland followed.

Murat Yakin’s team shared the same scoreline with hosts Germany last time out but were within touching distance of a famous victory and top spot in the group before Niclas Fullkrug found a late leveller.

Switzerland vs. Italy lineups & team news

Switzerland will be forced into at least one change as right wing-back Silvan Widmer is suspended. Leonidas Stergiou is the favourite to start in his absence although the lack of a natural alternative means Yakin could get creative.

Breel Embolo started his first match of the Euros last time out after an injury-ravaged spell and is set to continue in attack, where Ruben Vargas and Zeki Amdouni are pushing for starts.

Switzerland projected starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Sommer (GK) — Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez — Stergiou, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer — Ndoye, Vargas — Embolo.

Spalletti is tipped to revert to 4-3-3 after the patchy results of his back three experiment against Croatia. There will be a new face in defence, with Gianluca Mancini most likely to replace the suspended Riccardo Calafiori. Left-back Federico Dimarco sat out training with a calf complaint on Friday but is expected to be fit.

The Italy boss could once again shuffle around his shot-shy attackers. Federico Chiesa would be a popular inclusion in the starting lineup in place of Giacomo Raspadori, which Gianluca Scamacca could get another go at centre-forward at Mateo Retegui‘s expense. Sky Italia reported on Friday that Stephan El Shaarawy was poised to complete a three-man forward line, with Nicolo Fagioli set to join Nicolo Barella and Bryan Cristante in midfield.

Italy projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Donnarumma (GK) — Di Lorenzo, Mancini, Bastoni, Dimarco —  Barella, Fagioli, Cristante — Chiesa, Scamacca, El Shaarawy.

Switzerland vs. Italy prediction

  • Score prediction: Switzerland 1-1 Italy (Switzerland win on penalties)

Switzerland have an experienced, talented and well-balanced side that have played the better football of these two teams at the tournament so far.

Expect them to make the early running before Italy’s taste for getting things done on the big stage drags them back into the contest. The extent to which Jorginho is able to dictate against a Swiss engine room featuring the excellent partnership of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler.

It could well go the distance, a familiar scenario for Switzerland after they beat France and lost to Spain on penalties at the previous European Championship. A duel between two of the best goalkeepers in the competition in Yann Sommer and Gianluigi Donnarumma would be appointment viewing.
