  • Not willing to settle for a top-four finish
  • The Selecao have already reached Germany

WHAT HAPPENED?

Ronaldo will be participating in his sixth European Championship this summer but his hunger to succeed and win the championship remains the same as it was back in 2004. Even at 39, he is Portugal’s talisman and with a record number of international caps (207) and goals scored (130), Ronaldo’s presence is expected to be pivotal for the 2016 champions.

WHAT RONALDO SAID

Upon arrival in Marienfeld, the team’s base for Euro 2024, Ronaldo reflected on the journey, drawing comparisons to the 2006 World Cup. “It was very beautiful, with all the roads filled with Portuguese and Germans. It brought back memories from 18 years ago,” Ronaldo remarked. “I have good memories from that time, and it feels like something has changed, but it’s still special.”

Ronaldo’s ambitions for the team are clear and bold. “Semi-finals? I hope we can go further,” he stated. “We must take it step by step, live in the moment, stay calm, and continue working hard. We know it’s a short competition, but the team is well-prepared,” he added, showcasing his confidence in the squad’s capabilities.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has extended his career by moving to Saudi Arabia, where he scored 50 goals for Al Nassr in the most recent season. This remarkable tally is his highest in eight years, reminiscent of his peak years at Real Madrid. In the recent friendly against Ireland, he bagged another brace which highlighted the rich vein of form he is in.

“I feel prepared for this competition,” Ronaldo said.

“There are five days left until our first game, and it’s crucial to get off to a good start. I enjoy football, and records are a byproduct, not a goal—they come naturally. This being my sixth European Championship, it’s about enjoying it in the best way possible, playing well, and ensuring the team can win.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Despite his extensive experience, Ronaldo admitted to feeling some nervesy, which he considers both natural and necessary.

“Anxiety is always there, that tingling in your stomach, especially the day before a game,” he stated. “I’m glad I feel it because when I don’t, it’s a sign to stop. I feel motivated and prepared. The team is very calm. We had a day to spend with our families, which is important. The team is excited and happy, and the trip went well. I believe this generation deserves to win a competition of this magnitude, but we must take it step by step. Dreaming is good, and we have to keep dreaming.”
