- Hummels contract to expire at end of month
- Expected to leave Dortmund
- AC Milan leading race to sign defender
WHAT HAPPENED?
Hummels is coming to the end of his current contract with Borussia Dortmund and a summer exit is “increasingly likely,” according to Sky Sport Germany. The defender has no interest in moving to MLS or the Saudi Pro League and would rather stay in Europe if he does move on. AC Milan are the current favourites to sign the 35-year-old.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The defender is expected to move on as he does not seem to have the best relationship with manager Edin Terzic. Hummels has been very critical of the coach’s “submissive” tactics ahead of the Champions League final with Real Madrid. The defender has also said he will wait until after the final to make a decision on his future but said retirement is the “least likely” option right now.
DID YOU KNOW?
Hummels will not play at Euro 2024 with Germany this summer after being left out of the squad by Julian Nagelsmann. The defender has admitted he’s “bitter” about the decision because he believes he is “currently one of the five best defenders in Germany.”
WHAT NEXT FOR HUMMELS
Hummels was part of the Dortmund side that finished as runners-up in the final in 2012–13 and will be hoping to finish his season on a high by beating Madrid and finally getting his hands on the European Cup. The game looks like being his last in a Dortmund shirt with the defender facing a big decision over the summer over where he’ll play his football next season.
