WHAT HAPPENED?

The 36-year-old forward is approaching the end of his contract during a second spell at Portuguese giants Benfica. He will hit free agency this summer, with the plan being to return to his roots in Argentina at that stage – with Di Maria heading back to where it all began for him.

According to A Bola, Di Maria will link up with Rosario Central – his first club – on a six-month deal. After spending the rest of the calendar year in his homeland, the veteran winger will then travel north to join iconic countryman Messi at Inter Miami.

Messi – who savoured global glory alongside Di Maria at Qatar 2022 and will be going in search of another Copa America crown in June – is tied to a contract at Inter Miami through 2025. He may trigger a 12-month extension at some stage, but the Herons are set to be the final club in Di Maria’s distinguished career.
