- Van Dijk eager to work with Slot
- Has already got in touch with the manager
- Gravenberch also welcomed ex-Feyenoord coach
WHAT HAPPENED?
Slot’sappointment as Liverpool’s manager comes after a successful stint at Feyenoord, where he led the team to the 2022-23 Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup this term. His impending arrival at Anfield has been well-received by Van Dijk, who has revealed that he has already held discussions with the new manager about next season while insisting he plans to stay at Liverpool for at least one more year.
WHAT VAN DIJK SAID
Speaking from the Netherlands’ training camp for the European Championship, Van Dijk said: “I still have a year left on my contract. I am the club captain and I have made it clear I am there for the new coach and enthusiastic over the next season. Obviously, there will be a lot of changes but I am confident we will make a big success of it.
“I congratulated him of course and I’m really pleased for him and his family. We spoke about the team and the future, but now my focus is fully on the national team.”
Another Dutch player at the Anfield stable, Ryan Gravenberch, is also excited about Slot’s arrival, as he added: “I think he can be good for my career, it’s a coach who wants to play good football.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Slot’s task will be to build on the strong foundation left by Jurgen Klopp and simultaneously blend his ideas and philosophy so that there is a smooth transition at Anfield. And with the support of senior players in the dressing room like Van Dijk, his job should run smoothly.
WHAT NEXT FOR SLOT?
As Liverpool start looking ahead to their first season under Slot’s guidance, there is a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement among the players. His track record and style at Feyenoord have earned him a reputation of being an attacking manager, making him a suitable successor to Klopp.
