- Man Utd want Ashworth as sporting director
- Newcastle employee approached by Omar Berrada
- Revealed secret negotiations with Red Devills
WHAT HAPPENED?
Ashworth sent an email to Oma Berrada’s INEOS email account declaring his intention to accept United’s offer for the role, but The Daily Mail reports he sent a copy of the response to his Newcastle account. United had not yet made Newcastle aware of their interest in Ashworth, however, as the director let slip their secret negotiations.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The revelation could leave United open to an investigation into the club’s conduct. Berrada is not yet officially a United employee as he is on gardening leave from Manchester City until July 13, meaning he may be in breach of contract. Ashworth may also have been in breach of confidence by revealing details to Berrada of Newcastle’s agreement with Brighton that saw him join the Magpies in the first place.
DID YOU KNOW?
United and Newcastle have not yet come to an agreement over compensation for Ashworth. The 53-year-old has been placed on gardening leave by the club and United part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggested it could be 18 months before he is free to join the Red Devils.
WHAT NEXT?
Ashworth may end up taking Newcastle to arbitration in an effort to force the St James’ Park team to let him make the move to Old Trafford. However, the possible breach of Premier League regulations may cause trouble for the Red Devils.
