Thomas Tuchel drops bombshell as Bayern Munich boss confirms he'll leave at end of season despite Harry Kane pushing for German to stay
  • Missed out on major silverware in 2023-24
  • Still intends to step down this summer
  • Bundesliga giants in need of a replacement

WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss revealed back in February that he intended to walk away from a prominent post in German football. With Bayern surrendering the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, while also suffering Champions League semi-final heartache against Real Madrid, they will be ending the 2023-24 campaign empty-handed.

WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Talks have been held regarding a managerial U-turn from Tuchel, with Bayern struggling to line up a successor, but he has announced that a parting of ways will be happening. Tuchel has said ahead of a season finale at Hoffenheim on Saturday: “This is my last press conference at Sabener Strasse. There were talks, but we didn’t reach an agreement, so the decision of February still stands.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Senior figures inside the Bayern camp – including England international striker Kane and World Cup winners Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer – are said to have urged Tuchel to remain in his current post. Those words have fallen on deaf ears, with the 50-year-old preparing to move on after his 61st game at the helm.

WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN?

Bayern have been linked with a number of potential successors to Tuchel, including the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Ralf Rangnick, but have been unable to reach an agreement with any and will now need to step up their search for a coach with the necessary credentials to lead the club into 2024-25 and beyond.
