WHAT HAPPENED?

In the summer of 2023, Marsch was reportedly interviewed by US Soccer to take over as the head coach of the United States national men’s team. However, midway through the process, Marsch’s agent announced that his client was no longer in the running for the job. Eventually, US Soccer announced that Gregg Berhalter had been rehired and would continue as USMNT head coach. Marsch has now explained the circumstances behind the odd events that took place.

WHAT MARSCH SAID

Speaking on CBS’s Call It What You Want podcast, Marsch said: “My respect for U.S. Soccer is big, but I went through a process with them, right? And I’m not going to go into it, but I wasn’t treated very well in the process.

“And so whatever, that’s in the past now. The minute it was done I was like, ‘OK, I’m moving forward, and I’m going to figure out what’s right for me.’

“It motivated me again to find the right people. And so now I just want to talk about Canada, because I’m excited. I feel like it’s a fan base and a player pool and a nation that resonates with me.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since being sacked by Leeds United in February of last year, Marsch hasn’t had a coaching job and has been working as a pundit with CBS Sport, where he did not shy away from criticizing Berhalter and the USMNT. He has now secured his spot as Canada’s boss and has a contract with the Reds until the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

WHAT NEXT FOR MARSCH?

The American tactician will now prepare for his first game in charge of the Canadian national team as they will be in action against the Netherlands and France to prepare for the Copa America in June.
