Quincy Promes released by Spartak Moscow after ex-Ajax star’s arrest in Dubai and six-year prison sentence for cocaine smuggling in Netherlands

Spartak have confirmed that Promes has left the club as a free agent following the expiration of his contract on June 30. The former Netherlands international was arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch prosecutors in March, having been sentenced to six years in prison in absentia the month before for drug trafficking – as per Reuters.

WHAT SPARTAK SAID

Spartak released an official statement confirming Promes’ exit via their website. The Russian Premier League club have, however, also left the door open for the 32-year-old to return to the club at some point in the future.

“Quincy Promes missed the entire second half of the season due to personal reasons that prevented him from returning to Russia after the winter training camp in the UAE,” the statement reads. “Unfortunately, these circumstances are still in force, and it is not possible to talk about Quincy resuming his performance at the club at this stage. At the same time, our club hopes that in the future the parties will be able to return to this issue. In total, Quincy played 235 matches for our team, in which he scored 114 goals – today this is the 6th result in the history of the club.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Promes also has another conviction on his record. As per ESPN, in 2023 he was found guilty of stabbing his cousin in the leg and sentenced to 18 months in prison, however he did not attend the trial at Amsterdam District Court.

WHAT NEXT

Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 games for the Netherlands during his international career, is currently considered a fugitive in his homeland – according to NL Times. The Netherlands requested his extradition from Dubai at a hearing held in May, but a final decision has not yet been made.
