‘Hopefully I’ll help to win trophies’ – Lionesses star Mary Earps explains what she can bring to PSG after joining on free transfer from Man Utd

  • Earps joins PSG on two-year deal
  • Left Man Utd on free transfer this summer
  • Identifies qualities she can bring to Paris

WHAT HAPPENED?

Earps was out of contract in England this summer and opted for a move to France over a renewal with the Red Devils, signing for PSG on a two-year deal. It’s a switch that will make her the highest-paid goalkeeper in the women’s game.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

It’s a transfer that contributes to some interesting moves in France this summer. Lyon remain the country’s dominant force on the women’s side but they have switched managers this summer, replacing new Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor with former Arsenal head coach Joe Montemurro, and are set to lose centre-back Griedge Mbock Bathy to PSG. Though star winger Tabitha Chawinga is set to go the other way, Earps will hope her arrival can help the Parisians close the gap to OL as they search for only their second-ever top-flight league title.

WHAT EARPS SAID

Speaking upon the announcement of the transfer, Earps picked out some of the qualities she can add to PSG as the club looks to collect more trophies collection. “I will bring experience, hopefully leadership, a lot of communication and encouragement in the team,” she said. “Hopefully I can bring quality and help the team to get good results and win trophies. That’s what I’m here to do. [I have] a lot of energy, a lot of passion. I work really hard to try and be the best that I can be so that I can help the team. I just want to be the goalkeeper that is good for the team, supports her team-mates and helps get good results.

“It’s really exciting. I’m so excited to be here. I can’t wait to get started. I feel really, really proud to hold that jersey up and be signing today. For me, hearing about the ambition of the club, they want to be the best team in Europe, the best team in the world, and that’s exactly what I want to be. I want to be the best in the world and I want to play in the best team in the world and I want to win lots of trophies. This club is striving to do that and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

“I’ve watched quite a bit [of PSG] over the last year and it’s been really interesting to see how the league’s kind of changed a little bit, obviously with the playoffs and things like that. It’s an exciting time to join and there’s been some very competitive games in there with some strong teams and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into those. I think the team is really good. I think the team has a lot of quality and I think it has a bright future. Hopefully I can add to that and help the team even more, because they’re in a really good spot.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Despite Lyon’s dominance, and the fact they knocked PSG out in the Champions League semi-finals, the Parisians didn’t end last season without a trophy. The club from the capital won just a fifth major honour when they triumphed in the Coupe de France final.

WHAT NEXT FOR EARPS AND PSG?

Earps’ arrival is expected to be followed by that of Mbock Bathy, while a new manager is also to be appointed after Jocelyn Precheur surprisingly left the club to join the ambitious English second-tier side, London City Lionesses.
