- Varga’s father speaks to Hungarian publication
- Player has already undergone facial surgery
- Family now able to feel calmer about situation
WHAT HAPPENED?
With an operation having taken place at a hospital in Stuttgart, Andras Varga gave an update to a Hungarian publication explaining that the family is now able to feel calmer about Barnabas’ condition.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Varga was given lengthy treatment on the pitch following an accidental mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Hungary’s football federationĀ later confirmed the striker had suffered a concussion and broken several bones in his face. His team-mates were visibly distressed as Varga lay on the turf, desperately urging stadium medics to react quicker, with captain Dominik Szobszlai in tears.
WHAT ANDRAS VARGA SAID
“Together with my wife, we are waiting for the news that Barni’s sweetheart will send us,” Varga Sr. toldĀ Nemzeti Sport. The operation has been performed, Barni’s sweetheart will provide information on our child’s condition every minute if necessary.
“It is not yet known when he will be released from the hospital in Stuttgart, nor how long he will miss. It’s no secret, the family went through difficult moments in front of the television screen, but now we can be calmer.”
WHAT NEXT FOR HUNGARY?
Having snatched victory against Scotland, Hungary face a nervous wait to see if their three points will be enough to earn a place in the knockout stage as one of the four best third-place group finishers. At Euro 2020, Ukraine got through with three points, but Finland and Slovakia both went home on goal difference with the same tally. If Hungary do make it through, Varga won’t play again, but their campaign has suddenly taken on extra meaning as the squad unites behind their injured team-mate. Denmark reached the semi-finals three years ago off the back of losing Christian Eriksen to a life-threatening cardiac arrest.
