Amadou Onana snapped at a journalist for confusing him for Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, following Belgium’s Euro defeat to Slovakia.
- Belgium beaten 1-0 by Slovakia
- Onana had an unusual experience in the mixed zone
- A journalist confused him with the Man Utd goalkeeper
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Everton midfielder had a disappointing outing at the Deutsche Bank Park where Belgium paid the price for being wasteful in front of goal as Slovakia condemned them to a shock defeat by a 1-0 margin. However, Onana would have hardly expected that another hilariously shocking incident awaited him in the mixed zone when a journalist would mistake him for Andre Onana.

WHAT ONANA SAID
Onana was surprised to be called Andre and he immediately corrected the reporter saying: “Andre is not even my name, mate. You know what I mean. Go on…”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Despite sharing the same surname, Amadou and Andre have distinct backgrounds and career paths. Andre, born in Cameroon, plays for United and the Cameroon national team. In contrast, Amadou was born in Senegal to a Cameroonian father and a Senegalese mother before moving to Brussels at the age of 11. He made his debut for the Belgium senior team in 2022 and has been an important part of their squad since.
WHAT NEXT FOR AMADOU ONANA?
For Onana, it was a moment of frustration on an already challenging day. However, his focus remains on helping Belgium succeed in Euro 2024 and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they play against Romania on June 22.
