Arda Guler broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s record to become the youngest player to score on their Euros debut against Georgia.
- Guler scores screamer at Euro 2024
- Put Turkey 2-1 up against Georgia
- Becomes youngest goalscorer on debut in tournament
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Real Madrid midfielder scored from distance to mark his first goal at the European Championships. The strike was something to behold as he lined it up from distance with his left foot, leaving Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili clawing at thin air as the ball sailed into the top corner.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Guler’s strike at 19 years and 114 days makes him the youngest player to score on his debut at the tournament. The record has been held by Cristiano Ronaldo until now, who netted at 19 years and 128 days at Euro 2004 in a defeat to Greece. Now there is a new name at the top and it was an incredible strike to create history with.
DID YOU KNOW?
Guler has not just been a standout performer for his country this season. At Real Madrid, he has also impressed, scoring six goals in 10 La Liga appearances. He has had to play backup to Jude Bellingham for most of the campaign, with injuries affecting him too, but the young Turk has impressed when the Englishman has not been available.
WHAT NEXT FOR GULER?
Having starred in Turkey’s opening defeat in Group F at Euro 2024, Guler has a great chance of progressing through to the knockout stages of the tournament. If he puts in more performances like the one in Dortmund, his side will be able to give any team a game.
