Micah Richards has revealed his favourites for Euro 2024 and tipped Germany’s Florian Wirtz as his breakout star for the tournament.
“France are the favourites for me,” said Richards. “I don’t think they’ve got better players than England but when they get together and with the system they play, I think they’re a better team than England right now,” he added.
As part of his tournament predictions, Richards insisted that Wirtz, who did the league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen this season, is his one to watch, describing the 21-year-old as ‘unbelievable.’
According to Marca in Spain, the attacking midfielder is set to join Real Madrid next summer.
Wirtz scored 18 goals and made 20 assists in 49 games this season and has established himself as a regular in Julian Nagelsmann’s side for the national team as Germany prepare to host the Euros on home soil, starting in Munich against Scotland on Friday.
Asked for his dark horses for the Euros, Richards chose Portugal, who won the tournament in 2016.
Managed by Roberto Martinez and led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal were the only team to finish the qualifying campaign with a 100 per cent record, winning all ten games.
“Ronaldo’s still bagging goals and they’ve got the likes of Bernardo Silva, who delivers for Man City, week in week out,”said Richards.
