  • Goalkeeper Howard scores outlandish effort

WHAT HAPPENED?

After ending regulation with a 5-0 lead, the Red Dragons went into Target Score Time at the event to try and secure the victory. After seeing the match eventually reduced to 4v4, up stepped Howard.

The 37-year-old drilled home an outstanding effort, his second in as many days, with celebrations echoing from the crowd and those around him on the pitch.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Red Dragons are on a sensational run at the tournament. A fan favorite in Cary, North Carolina, Wrexham have garnered massive crowds at the event while putting on a show.

Winning 6-0 over their opposition – Socceroof – sent them through to the Round of 16 and they are now just four wins away from claiming the $1m cash prize.

WHAT HOWARD SAID

“Delighted, we’re buzzing, the team was brilliant and we put in a lot of effort – have some sore bodies but yeah, the team obviously getting us a five-nil (5-0)l lead and then to cap it off, I’ve managed to make a goal again so yeah, it was a bit strange,” Howard said speaking exclusively to GOAL. “It’s a bit surreal, but yeah, I think they were just about to sub me off and I’ve stepped in and just put one in the bottom corner.”

The Wrexham keeper toyed with the shout of channeling his inner-Paul Mullin with his pair of goals, but instead credited the training they do – and his fellow goalkeepers.

“To be fair, as goalkeepers we do a lot of shooting against each other in training so, if you put me 20 yards out in front of goal, I fancy myself to hit the target at least. That’s what I’ve tried to do, just work with goalkeepers and you never know what can happen. Obviously, this was a knockout round game.”
