Jose Mourinho sends trophy message to England and Bayern star Harry Kane as he makes bold Euro 2024 prediction

• Mourinho praises England’s Harry Kane

• Believes Portugal are among favourites for Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate’s England are heading to Germany to compete at the European Championship as one of the favourites to lift the trophy at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. However, Mourinho does not think the Three Lions are the favourites and would rather place his bet on Portugal. The former Chelsea boss is, however, expecting big things from Kane at the tournament.

Kane has been a top striker for almost eight years, performing consistently with Tottenham Hotspur and England, however, the only thing that he has been criticized for has been his inability to win trophies. The 30-year-old still has yet to win a single official tournament, and Mourinho thinks if he had not been sacked by Spurs in 2021 just a few days before the Carabao Cup final, he would have handed Kane his first trophy.

Mourinho said: “Kane has scored goals for Tottenham, England, and I had no doubts that he would score goals for Bayern. Harry is a fantastic, complete player who scores goals from all over the pitch but isn’t selfish – he assists, drops deep, builds play, presses, defends.

“The only thing he is missing is to win a trophy. He was my player at Tottenham and I was going to win one with him, but I was sacked six days before the final.”

Mourinho also offered a few predictions for Euro 2024: “I don’t want to be disrespectful about previous generations that we had, but in terms of squad depth and quality, we are probably now the best we have ever been and Portugal can go on to win it.

“It’s about having confidence, self belief that they can beat anyone. I don’t want to say Portugal are the best team, but Spain, France, England, Germany are not better.

“The best problem for a coach is having to choose who to play, because there are two great right-backs, two great left-backs, two great positional midfielders – and I say two only because there is a 23-man squad but there are more.

“If there is a surprise, I will be surprised! France and Germany always do well, Portugal and England are better than ever. These four teams. I’m not certain about Spain but the football they play and the players they have are of the highest quality. Italy or Belgium would be a surprise.”

The Euros will kick off on July 14 when Germany take on Scotland. England will begin their campaign with a clash against Serbia on June 16, while Portugal will face Czech Republic on June 18
