- Switzerland fail to score vs Hungary
- Lehmann withdrawn after first half
- Remain top of Group B1
WHAT HAPPENED?
Switzerland’s perfect record in Euro 2025 qualifying was ended by Hungary in Eastern Europe. Lehmann and Co struggled to compete at the Hidegkuti Nandor Stadion, registering just two shots on target compared to Hungary’s five. The Aston Villa star was taken off after the first half but the change backfired on Switzerland, who conceded the only goal of the match in the 73rd minute.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fortunately for the Swiss, the loss does not damage their position too much. They remain top of Group B1 on nine points, three ahead of second-placed Turkey and five ahead of both Hungary and Azerbaijan. It was their first defeat out of four games played so far and just the third goal they have conceded.
WHAT SWITZERLAND SAID
It was certainly a shock defeat for Switzerland, who have been firing on all fronts with Lehmann leading the charge. Nevertheless, they will have to regroup and go again in July when they face the other two teams in their group. Their official Switzerland Instagram account was humble in defeat on Tuesday night, posting the message: “Fall down, stand up, get back to winning ways in Lausanne.”
WHAT NEXT FOR LEHMANN AND SWITZERLAND?
Switzerland will have a month to wind down and relax before going again in July. They first take on Turkey on July 12 before facing Azerbaijan four days later. After a busy Women’s Super League campaign with Aston Villa, Lehmann will finally get the chance to head on her holidays and step away from football for a few weeks.
