- Southgate leaves Rashford out of England squad
- Man Utd star pays price for disappointing season
- Rashford reacts to decision on social media
WHAT HAPPENED?
Southgate has named his provisional England squad for Euro 2024 but has opted to omit Rashford after a tough season for the Manchester United star. Rashford and Jordan Henderson are the two most-high profile absentees from an England squad that includes five uncapped players. Southgate has explained his decision to leave out Rashford, saying “other players have had better seasons” than the 26-year-old.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Rashford has been part of a Manchester United squad that crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages and went on to finish eighth in the Premier League table this season. An FA Cup final awaits on Saturday against Manchester City, but there’s no doubt it’s been a disappointing campaign for the Red Devils. Rashford has been unable to find his best form on a consistent basis, scoring just seven times in the Premier League, and has now paid the price by being left out of the England squad.
WHAT RASHFORD SAID
Rashford has reacted to news of his omission from the squad in a post on social media. He posted an image of the squad list on Instagram with the message: “Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament.”
WHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD
Rashford will be hoping he can end what’s been a difficult season with Manchester United on a high by lifting the FA Cup on Saturday. The forward will then get to enjoy a rare summer off after being left out of the England squad and is also expected to hold talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe over his future at the club.
