WHAT HAPPENED?

Berhalter’s 27-player squad features plenty of the regulars, headlined by Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and Weston McKennie. Tyler Adams is also in the squad despite his recent lack of minutes on the club level with Bournemouth.

All four striker contenders have been called in, although it remains to be seen what Berhalter does with Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, Josh Sargent and Haji Wright. The squad also features a bit of a surprise in Timmy Tillman, who joins his younger brother Malik among the callups.

On the defensive side, Shaq Moore rejoins the U.S. to contend for a starting spot to replace Sergino Dest.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Berhalter will now begin the process of breaking down this squad into a 23-man version ahead of the upcoming Copa America. The team is already battling injury issues, namely one to Dest, but Berhalter has some difficult decisions to make even outside of the right-back position.

The U.S. coach will also have one eye on the Olympics, where the U.S. will be able to take three overage players this summer. Several of the USMNT’st op stars, players like Gio Reyna and Yunus Musah, are eligible for the Olympics but aren’t expected to pull double-duty this summer.
