- Nwabali is one of the top keepers in PSL
- He has been linked with a move to Chiefs
- The custodian shares his mind about playing in Europe
WHAT HAPPENED?
Stanley Nwabali has been good since joining Chippa United in the 2022/23 season and is currently among the best goalkeepers in the Premier Soccer League.
The 27-year-old played a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles secure silver medals at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals after losing the final to the hosts Ivory Coast.
It explains why Nwabali has been linked with a move abroad, but reports have it Kaizer Chiefs are aiming at signing him.
The custodian has explained why he may follow Ronwen Williams’ footsteps by extending his stay in South Africa.
WHAT NWABALI SAID
“Ronwen Williams is at Sundowns, he gets everything he wants, he’s got the name, the sponsor, his family is here, everyone is supporting him, he’s the captain of Bafana Bafana, to me the league is okay,” Nwabali told Far Post.
“The league, the pay is a little bit nice for [depending on] a certain level of your team. It’s not like in West Africa where our leagues are not that good. We want to go to Europe, we want to go to South Africa, we want to go to Morocco, all those kinds of leagues, if your league is nice there’s no point in you leaving.
“If your league is nice, you’re getting paid, you’re getting sponsors, what are you leaving for? ,” he continued.
“If you want to challenge yourself, you can still leave. It depends on you if you can cope there, if you can’t cope there, it’s fine to just come back and play your football.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Chiefs have not had a consistent goalkeeper in recent seasons; erratic Brandon Petersen was demoted a couple of months ago, while Bruce Bvuma, at times, has been inconsistent for the Glamour Boys.
Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune might be leaving the Glamour Boys once his contract expires at the end of the season.
It explains why Nwabali has been heavily linked with a move to the Soweto giants after his commanding displays for the Chilli Boys.
WHAT NEXT?
It is interesting to see whether Chiefs will make a formal bid for the Nigeria international once the transfer window opens in the next couple of weeks.
Amakhosi are desperate to end their trophy drought in the 2024/25 season after the frustrations witnessed in the almost-ending campaign.
